Typhoon Champi swept past Taiwan on Saturday, killing one person and injuring 527, Taiwan's fire department said. The victim was a man swept away by waves near the island of Liuqiu. Wind gusts reached about 227 kph in some coastal areas, bringing down trees and power lines.
At one point more than 288,000 homes had lost electricity, though most had been reconnected. A total of 242 flights were cancelled on Saturday, down from almost 1,000 on Friday. The storm, once a super typhoon, is weakening as it moves north towards the Chinese coast and eventually southern Japan.
