Indian stock markets closed lower for the fourth straight session on Friday, October 23. The BSE Sensex slipped 125.56 points (0.17 per cent) to 73,123.83, while the NSE Nifty 50 fell 87.65 points (0.39 per cent) to 22,600. During the session the Sensex had fallen more than 700 points.
The decline was driven by surging crude oil prices, selling by foreign investors and concerns over US interest rates. Brent crude rose to about $114 a barrel after attacks on Saudi Arabia. Mid-cap and small-cap stocks fell more sharply than the benchmarks, and investors lost around Rs 7.42 lakh crore in market value in a day.
