Israel President Picks Eisenkot Over Netanyahu To Form Next Government
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has asked Gadi Eisenkot, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's main rival, to try to form the next government. Neither side won a clear majority in the 27 October election, after which the president held consultations with all parties.
Eisenkot was endorsed by 67 lawmakers, compared with 46 backing Netanyahu. The former army chief will formally receive the mandate today, and will have 28 days to build a coalition of at least 61 seats in the 120-member Knesset. Netanyahu will remain caretaker prime minister in the meantime.
